10 Softwares Civil engineers needs

You are a civil or hydraulic engineer, then you will have to do a lot of simulations.

As an engineer I have to deal with a variety of problems such as hydraulics related problems, Structural, and Finite elements problems...
Based on that I need to any potential field I might work i learn a related software, the list below contains 10 software that a civil engineer should learn :

  1. MIKE DHI : Environmental and hydrodynamics modelling.
  2. ARCGIS : Map and spacial analyzing.
  3. AUTOCAD : CAD
  4. EPANET : Design of drinking water networks
  5. COVADIS: Topography and water networks design
  6. Excel: Calculations
  7. HEC RAS: Hydraulics
  8. HEC HMS: Hydraulics
  9. STAAD PRO: Structural
  10. ABAQUS : FEM

The few steps that allow you to determine the Watershed of specified region using ARCGIS.

Watersheds are determined  manually using topography maps or using tools such as ARCGIS and Global Mapper.

The manual method is a complicated and consume a lot of time.

The method using software is easy but you need a high resolution MNT map and the ARCGIS/Global Mapper software.

For ARCGIS you'll need to install ArcHydro and extensions of Arcgis.
Necessitis :
  • TOPOGRAPHY MAP(MNT)
  • ARCGIS
  • ARCHYDRO
Steps follow in Archydro Tool :
       a-      Level DEM
        b-      DEM Reconditioning
        c-      Fill Sinks :
        d-      Flow Direction
        e-      Flow Accumulation
        f-       Stream Definition
        g-      Stream Segmentation
        h-      Catchment Grid Delineation
         i-        Catchement Polygon Processing
         j-        Drainage Line Processing
         k-      Adjoint Catchement Processing
         l-        Drainage Point Processing
Second step:
         a-      Batch Point Generation
        b-      Batch Watershed Delineation

Application :

Flood prevention
Design of a dam
Design of roads
Hydrology
Water resources management
